From Stability to Survival: Hamza’s Story
Before we tell you Hamza’s story, take a moment to imagine this.
One day, you have a career you worked hard for — a stable home, a loving family, and a life full of promise.
And the next day, war takes all of it away.
Hamza was a successful computer engineer in Gaza. He had stability. He had dignity. He had everything he needed to build a good life. But war changed everything overnight.
As violence escalated, Hamza made the hardest decision in his life. He sold his car and used every resource he had to escape — desperate to secure safety first, then bring his wife and children after. But once he reached safety, the borders closed. His dream of reuniting with his family vanished in an instant.
When Hamza arrived in Canada, he didn’t just carry a suitcase. He carried grief, loss, and deep uncertainty about what the future might hold.
Not long after, the tragedy struck again.
His father passed away due to contaminated water, and the rest of his family was displaced. Meanwhile, Hamza was coping with injuries to his back and legs — lasting scars from the war — as well as the heavy burden of trauma.
At just 30 years old, he now rents a small room, living alone as a refugee claimant. Depression, physical pain, and isolation have made life incredibly difficult. Still, Hamza’s spirit remains unbroken.
That’s when he heard about National Zakat Foundation Canada.
Through your generosity, NZF was able to step in right away. We supported Hamza with food, essential furnishings, home items, help with bills, and clothing. We’re also walking with him on the path to recovery — helping him access medical care so that he can heal, both physically and emotionally.
Hamza’s journey is far from over. But because of your zakat, today he breathes a little more easily. He sleeps a little warmer. He feels a little less alone.
This is the power of local giving.
This is what your zakat and Sadaqah do — giving hope, dignity, and relief to those who’ve lost everything, right here in Canada.
Together, we can help more displaced individuals rebuild their lives with strength and hope.
