ARCHIVE: Your Zakat is Needed Here

YOUR ZAKAT
IS NEEDED
HERE!

More Than Ever, We Need Your Help!

It's time to come together as Muslims and show the impact of a collective response, whenever difficult circumstances may arise. Together, through the power of Zakat, we can help our neighbours in need and create a self-sufficient community!

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam, and a key part of the Islamic socio-economic system. By giving part of their wealth as Zakat, Muslims perform a religious duty, cleanse their own own wealth in the eyes of Allah, and help to uplift the faith and standard of life of the entire Muslim community.

Daily Nisab Values

Zakat is a compulsory act of worship that requires Muslims who own wealth at or above a certain threshold to donate a portion of that wealth, typically 2.5%, to those who are eligible. This threshold is called the Nisab.

It is defined as the dollar value of 85g of pure gold or 595g of pure silver. Most scholars prefer the lower value (silver Nisab) to be used because this results in more people paying Zakat and more people getting assistance from Zakat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is Zakat needed in Canada?

With the rising cost of living and current economic uncertainty, thousands of Canadians continue to live in poverty and are struggling to make ends meet, despite the availability of government support and benefits. Often-times, the most vulnerable members of our community, such as the homeless, elderly, refugees, and single parents come to us after exhausting all additional options and resources and have no one left to turn to for help. This is where your Zakat comes in.

Q: How will my Zakat be used?

Your Zakat will go towards helping families with food, shelter, clothing and other essentials. In addition to this, National Zakat Foundation also runs Nisa Homes, which is a group of transitional homes for women and children escaping domestic violence, homelessness, and forced resettlement.

Our support also goes beyond financial assistance. We help Zakat recipients navigate the resources available to them, assist them with developing a sustainability plan, and help them get back on their feet.

Q: Why should Zakat be given locally?

According to the Sunnah of Prophet Mohammed (SAW), Zakat is to be collected and distributed locally. Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that the Prophet sent Muadh ibn Jabal to Yemen, and said:

“You are going to some people among the People of the Book. Call them to bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that I am the messenger of Allah...tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them charity (Zakat) from their wealth, to be taken from the rich and given to their poor...”
