UNDERSTANDING THE NEED and impact of local zakat IN CANADA

Why is There So Much Need in Canada?

Inflation hits the vulnerable the hardest and social assistance is often not enough to break the cycle of poverty. Thousands of families living in Canada face real challenges related to poverty including hunger and homelessness. Zakat is a right our vulnerable Muslim brothers and sisters have upon us.

Does local Zakat help?

Since 2013, your local Zakat has brought dignity to thousands of Muslim brothers and sisters across Canada. Your local Zakat is keeping the community together, creating a stronger Ummah right here in Canada, and opening the door to a better future for all.

This Ramadan, we are presented with another opportunity to make an impact within our community, bringing dignity to our very own neighbours while earning double the reward in this blessed month.

Why trust us to collect and distribute your local Zakat? Find out here.

Answering Your Questions

Here you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our organization and its work. We hope that this page will help you learn more about us and how we can help you or your community.
Learn about Zakat
How long do recipients have to wait to get assistance?

Most applications are processed within 2 to 10 days from the submission of all supporting materials required depending on the volume of application we are dealing with at that specific time. For urgent cases, we process cases much sooner depending on the circumstances. Read more here.

What is the length of assistance for Zakat recipients?

NZF provides assistance for a short period of time (2-4 months generally). However, our team of caseworkers are equipped with the knowledge of government benefits and community resources, which are key in providing a more holistic service, with an aim toward self-sustainability.

Why do we need Zakat in Canada if there's government support?

Not everybody qualifies for government support, and those who do often find it is not sufficient to cover all of their basic needs. For example, a single adult living in Toronto or Vancouver may get $700 – $800 in support each month.
